Marty Robbins is still best known for his story-songs of the West. The landmark “concept” album Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs from 1959, was his best-selling recording which spent 36 weeks on Billboard’s Album chart.
This cut is from Marty Robbins’ “Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs” album recorded in 1959 in one afternoon. Sony/Legacy records reengineered the album in 1999 and rereleased it as one of its first of the American Legends series. Of course, this album included “El Paso” which was Robbins’ signature song. Background vocals and harmony included Jim, Chuck and Tompall Glaser.
Best known for his story-songs of the West, GUNFIGHTER BALLADS AND TRAIL SONGS, was Marty Robbins’ best selling album. Recorded in 1959, this still has to be one of the best country albums ever released. …”The Strawberry Roan,” “Running Gun,” and “In The Valley” will all have you singing along as Marty’s smooth voice and kind-hearted guitar trickle through your body and warm you up from the inside out. Country music has gone down the tubes as of late. It isn’t soulful, it isn’t blue collar, and it isn’t pure. It’s corporate pop music with a Nashville feel that is passed off as country. But, if everyone owned this album and listened to it daily, reminding themselves why country music was originally loved in the first place, then they could never get away with it. Here is country music like it was meant to be.
